Auckland, Apnu Gujarat News:
The Indian community in New Zealand, predominantly based in Auckland, has long awaited a fully operational Consulate General of India. Over the past two months, a temporary consulate has been functioning at the Mahatma Gandhi Centre, Mount Eden. In an exclusive interview with Apnu Gujarat, Consul General Dr. Madan Mohan Sethi shared significant developments, including enhanced services, plans for a new building, and initiatives to deepen India-New Zealand ties.

New Consulate Building Approval Imminent

Dr. Sethi revealed that the consulate, currently operating on a temporary basis, is awaiting final approval from India’s Ministry of External Affairs for a permanent facility. “We are optimistic about receiving the green light within the next 10 days,” Dr. Sethi stated. Once approved, the consulate will fully operationalize services such as visa processing and Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cards by February 2025.

Currently, the consulate offers services such as Death-Birth Certificates, Police Clearance Certificates (PCC), NRI Certificates, Life and Pension Certificates, Parent Affidavits for children in India, and Liquor Permits. The office has already seen a significant turnout from both the Indian community and local New Zealanders.

Strengthening India-New Zealand Relations

Dr. Sethi emphasized the role of the consulate in enhancing bilateral relations. With New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon scheduled to visit India this year, momentum is building for improved trade, education, healthcare, tourism, and agriculture collaboration. “New Zealand offers tremendous potential in research and development, and we aim to promote India’s growth while encouraging cooperation in these areas,” he said.

Efforts will also focus on increasing leaders and officials visits between the two countries and leveraging Auckland’s status as New Zealand’s economic hub. Additionally, the consulate plans to partner with the Indian diaspora and local community organizations to promote Indian culture and foster stronger ties.

Bollywood Mega Show in August 2025

In a move to celebrate and elevate Indian culture, Dr. Sethi announced plans for a grand Bollywood event in Auckland, scheduled for August 2025. “This mega show will feature Bollywood celebrities and attract participation from business leaders, tour operators, and universities,” he noted. The event is expected to draw significant attendance from both India and New Zealand, providing a unique platform for cultural exchange and networking opportunities.

A Vision for the Future

Dr. Sethi outlined the consulate’s vision to support the vibrant Indian diaspora in Auckland, which actively organizes cultural events representing various Indian states. By providing resources and guidance, the consulate aims to elevate these celebrations, ensuring a deeper appreciation for Indian heritage in New Zealand.

As the consulate takes strides to expand its services and initiatives, the coming months promise exciting developments for the Indian community and the bilateral partnership between India and New Zealand.
